The purpose of the paper was to find the potential impact of ideal project management maturity through an exploratory qualitative research. The authors used document analysis, standardized interviews, and qualitative guided interviews. The research findings indicate that the complexity of projects acts as a determining factor about the ideal maturity level. After comparing the findings with secondary literature review, the authors found that project complexity especially those that require participation need higher maturity level.

The article discusses the benefits of higher maturity level in project management especially when faced with project complexity. The study will focus on the importance of using the organization-specific ideal level of maturity in project management. The article focuses on the importance of applying project management especially in higher education. According to the article, many industries have realized the importance of project management. However, the concept often goes unnoticed in higher education. Considering project management as an art rather than an actual science leads to the spending of less money and time in the implementation of necessary structures eventually lead to failed projects. The article recognizes the importance of project management for successful projects.

The article contains some information on project management. Although its focus is on how to implement project management in higher education specifically in Drexel University, it provides useful information that is applicable in any industry. Since the topic is on the importance of project management, the article will be useful in two ways. First, it will help in discussing the meaning of project management. Second, it will be useful in identifying the importance of the concept.

On applicability, the article will be useful in our study. First, it was published in 2013 and therefore it is current enough for reliable information. Second, the results have been based on a research through a case study methodology together with research and surveys. Additionally, the authors have used a variety of scholarly sources. The article is thus applicable and will serve as an information source on the importance of project management.

The article is written by Badewi Amgad. Dr. Badewi Amgad serves as a senior lectured in Project Management and Entrepreneurship. He has a PhD in project, benefits, and programme management from the University of Cranfield. The article identifies the importance of combining project management and benefits management for successful projects. The author argues that both frameworks work toward successful projects. Through project management, organizations are able to deliver the right services in a timely and cost-effective manner. Badewi argues that although BM and PM practices lead to successful projects, project management has a greater impact leading to higher levels of success. A time and communication plan play an important role in the success of project management. Through continuous plan review, and management of expectations, project management delivers a successful project.

Since the article focuses on project success through project and benefits management, it will be useful in addressing the identified topic. It will help in the identification of the importance of project management. Although it’s focus on the importance of combining project management and benefits management for higher levels of success, the author identifies the benefits of project management for timely, efficient, and effective project delivery. The article is applicable for various reasons. First, it is timely considering that it was published in 2016. The information is thus updated and reliable. Second, the author has used a relevant literature review which provides a good framework for the topic. Third, the author makes a conclusion after conducting a reliable research. Fourth, the author used multiple scholarly sources. Therefore, it will be used as a credible and reliable source in finding information on the importance of project management.

The article is written by Golini Ruggero, Matteo Kalchschmidt, and Paolo Landoni. It was published in 2015. Golini is an associate professor at Bergamo University. Kalchschmidt is currently a full professor at Bergamo University. Landoni is a PhD holder in economics and management and is also a Biomedical Engineer. The contribution of the authors is thus reliable.  The authors discuss the importance of project management in international development projects. According to the article such projects that are carried out by non-governmental organizations play an important role in assisting developing nations. However, the lack of project management increase failure rates. The research shows that adapting practices that promote project management acts as a remedy to such failures. After conducting a large scale survey, the authors found that considering project management practices leads to successful projects.

Since the article discusses the importance of adopting project management for successful projects, it directly fits in our study. It provides information on the importance of project management. Although it gives its attention to international projects that are conducted by NGOs, this information can be applied by other organizations to improve their performance. This is especially because the survey involved over 500 project managers in data collection. Since the authors used an international survey in studying the diffusion of project management tools in various NGO projects, it improves its applicability to other similar organizations. Additionally, the article is reliable because it is timely, uses credible research methods, and uses various scholarly sources.

Lappe, M., & Spang, K. (2014). Investments in project management are profitable: A case study-based analysis of the relationship between the costs and benefits of project management. International Journal of Project Management, 32(4), 603-612.

The article was written by Lappe Marc and Spang Konrad. It focuses on the importance of project management. Lappe and Spang chair of project management are in a position to give reliable information in relation to project management. The article recognizes the increased use of project management as a management approach. The authors argue that the concept is used in managing of single projects as well as in entire project portfolios. Hey also add that PM is useful in understanding difficult tasks that require completion under a short time, tasks that required specialists from various fields, and those that require the collaboration of various departments. The concept has also been proven useful in change management.

The authors conducted a cost-benefit analysis to confirm the profitability of project management.  After obtaining data from an insurance company over nine years, it was found that project management results in cost savings. Among the benefits associated with investment in project management include increased returns, cost savings, and reduced need for rework. The focus of the article on the benefits of investing in project management makes it fit for our study. Since our topic is on the importance of project management, the study on cost-benefit analysis of PM will help in identifying various benefits of project management. In addition to the literature review, the study findings contain relevant information for our study.

The article is applicable because; first it is timely enough as it was published in 2014. Second, the conclusion is based on research findings. The study analysis is based on data set from many projects 251 to be specific over a nine year period associated with credible findings. Although the results cannot be generalized considering that data set was obtained from one company, they will serve as a framework in identifying the importance of project management.

Laufer Alexander, Hoffman, Edward, Russlee Jeffrey, and Cameron Scott are the authors of the article, ‘What successful project managers do’. Laufer is the Consortium director for Project Leadership at Wisconsin-Madison University. Hoffman is the chief knowledge officer at NASA. Russell is the executive director of the Consortium for Project Management at Wisconsin-Madison University. The positions make their contribution reliable.

The authors emphasize the importance of project management for higher levels of project success. However, for the success, project managers must focus on developing collaboration. This ensures that relevant people contribute as expected towards success. Second is integrating review and planning with learning. This involves relying on learning in planning and throughout the project. The third involves the prevention of key disruptions. This ensures that project managers are ready to respond to any disruptions proactively. Eventually, the article recognizes the importance of maintaining momentum. Through these roles, project managers are able to lead organizations into successful projects.

Although the article focuses on the roles project managers are expected to assume for successful projects, it will be useful in identifying the importance of project management. The authors recognize the importance of project management in managing project risks. For better results, the authors argue that project managers must assume the role of building collaboration, be information, and action oriented, and be focus on maintaining forward momentum. The role of project management in minimizing project risks is essential in our study. The article is applicable because apart from being timely (published 2015), the authors use credible sources. The information is also based on various case studies making it applicable to various projects.

The article ‘Project management assets and project management performance outcomes: an exploratory factor analysis’ is written by Mathur Gita, Jugdev Kam and Fung Tak. It was published in 2013. Dr. Mathur is a professor in the school of management with research interests in project management processes, and product development. Kam Jugdev has a Phd, she is a project management professional, and a professor is project management in Univeristy of Athabasca. Fung Tak is also a PhD holder. These credentials qualify the article is reliable.

The article focused on examining the characteristics of assets of project management and performance outcomes of project management. The aim was looking at the link between assets, organizational support, and having a competitive advantage. The study focused on analyzing data collected from online survey responses. Although the study had response rate, sample size, and reporting bias as limitations, it found that project management assets have an impact of project success. The assets in combination with organization support act as a source of competitive advantage.

By emphasizing on the important role of project management for successful projects, the article fits in our study. The information on the importance of project management assets and how it serves as a source of competitive advantage is related to the topic ‘importance of project management’. It supports the important role project management plays towards the success of any project.

By focusing on expected benefits rather that specified outputs project managers can lead an organization into success. The article emphasizes the important role benefits management at project level plays to service delivery value. The authors recognize the importance of benefits realization management in assessing the success of any project. The paper proposes the implementation of practices of benefits management in driving new projects. The article starts by defining project management. Then, it acknowledges the stress and challenge organizations face in building projects. The author identifies various factors that organizations deal with in construction projects including dealing with various contractors and suppliers, and making crucial decisions among others. The article identifies a successful project as one that is finished on time, one that adheres with set regulations, and one that is within the budget. The required skills in construction projects include experience in building, safety, cost control, and time management. The author argues that it is only through project management that construction projects can be successful. This is especially so in deep retrofit and renovation projects.

Jigeesh is a PhD holder who works as a full time professor.  The authors focus on analysis and control of some issues that delay pharmaceutical projects. According to the article, every project has objectives that it seeks to achieve. The success however depends on various issues including cost, budget, and most especially management. To improve health care services, pharmaceutical companies have identified the importance of project management. One of the identified factors that the study found to cause time delay is poor planning. The authors argue that for any project to be successful, it must effectively implement project management.

The article will be useful in our study because it focusses on the importance of improving service delivery through project management among other strategies. Emphasize on use of project management in the pharmaceutical industry makes the article to serve as a good source for our paper. The paper shows how project management improves projects service levels. The paper focuses on pharmaceutical industry limiting its findings from being generalized. However, the article will serve as a framework for improving understanding of the influence project management has on project success. The fact the study contributed towards filling the research gap makes it valuable. Additionally its timeliness and use of scholarly sources makes it reliable and credible and hence applicable in our study.
